Try These 3 Easy Tips to Hear God’s Voice Clearly

Updated: Apr 13

Ever feel like trying to hear God’s voice over your own busy thoughts is like spotting a lighthouse beam in the middle of a fierce storm? Here’s the good news: God has a history of showing up miraculously in the storms. 😉

Hearing God’s voice clearly has been one of the most life-changing parts of my journey with Him. Since my teenage years, those moments when the Father whispered His love, called me beautiful, or revealed pieces of my identity have meant everything. Those conversations—getting to know Him or just chatting about our day—have shaped my heart in unforgettable ways.

One Sunday at church, that connection got put on the spot in a fun way. A girl I didn’t know came up to me, asking for a prophetic word—with her phone out, already recording!

Talk about pressure, right?

I closed my eyes, prayed, and saw a field of red tulips in my imagination. Could that be a picture from God? Well… there’s one way to find out!

When I shared what I saw and what I thought God meant by it, she absolutely lit up. Then, she rolled up her sleeve and revealed her tattoo of… red tulips! 🌷

Right then, I knew I’d heard God’s voice, and she felt so seen and loved by Him. Sometimes, we just have to take a brave leap and let go of the pressure!

When it comes to hearing God, start with the beautiful truth that He treasures your desire to listen and longs for you to hear His love.

As His beloved child, it’s your birthright to recognize His voice—just like Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

He’s always there to guide you gently, making it simple for you to start hearing Him more clearly today!

Here are 3 Easy Tips for Practicing Hearing God’s Voice:

1. Dialogue Journaling. This is my favorite! 👇🏽

Write a prayer or thought, then listen and jot down any words or images you sense from God. Try a question like, “What do you love about me today, Jesus?” and wait for the first positive word or memory to surface. Don’t overthink it. Reflecting on these journal entries or sharing them with trusted friends increases your discernment of God’s voice and tone—which is always life-giving and brings peace!

2. Turn on Some Music. God’s voice + music is next-level 🎯

Ask Jesus to reveal something new as you listen to a favorite worship song or even a random shuffle. Songs that speak from God to you are a great start—close your eyes and imagine Him singing to you.

▶️ Song suggestions: Abbie Gamboa "dad song" or “Love Note”, Jenn Johnson Come To Me”, Forrest Frank “Always”, or Lauren Daigle “Rescue”.

3. Take in the Word. Continual revelation from the Bible is 🔝

Read the gospels and list Jesus’s attributes as He interacted with others, or read a Proverbs chapter daily. Notice what verse or phrase feels like it has a spotlight on it, just for you. 🔦

Try the ancient Lectio Divina method—focusing deeply on each word of a single verse, like “You are the light of the world!” (Matt 5:14), asking God to expand your understanding with each word.

Take Courtney, for example:

During the Revival Life Signature Course, I finally understood the difference between God’s unconditional love and my inner critic. I used to think that critical voice was God pushing me to do better and work harder, and that my mistakes were punishments. I thought my flaws were too many and my inadequacies disqualified me. But learning exactly where those harsh thoughts came from, and that they were not from God, changed everything. I even experienced physical healing that same week! Now, my thoughts filter through the warmth of a loving Father. I’m filling journals with God’s voice, and I know His plans for me are greater than I can imagine (Eph 3:20)!

Hearing God’s voice in everyday moments is essential for deepening your bond with Him and building trust.

May your heart stay attuned to His gentle whispers, guiding you through every storm!

To all that God’s words are producing in you,

🌱 Kelsi
