Sarah, one of our vibrant Revival Life ladies, once said trying to hear God felt like blackout curtains were pulled tight over her spiritual windows. 🏴
But that block wasn’t from heaven—she learned it was her own expectations. Once she shifted how she was listening, the light came pouring in. 🌞
Ever feel like this?
🙈 You try to pray—nothing but static.
🌀 You open your Bible—leave more confused than filled.
📱 You chase peace—but your mind won’t stop spinning.
We've ALL been there! I definitely have.
Every person who hears God confidently now once wrestled with silence, doubt, and distraction. It’s not about getting it perfect—it’s about persistence and learning how to posture yourself.
📖 When Samuel First Heard God’s Voice…
Samuel lived in the house of God, served faithfully, and followed all the church-y rules (1 Samuel 3). But still:
“In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions.”—1 Samuel 3:1
Then one night, God called him by name. Three times Samuel thought it was Eli. Finally, Eli caught on and said: “Say, ‘Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.’” That’s when God started speaking directly to Samuel.
💥 Here’s the kicker: Samuel lived in God’s house… but didn’t yet know His voice.
Let that sink in. Proximity doesn’t equal intimacy.
Even faithful people still have to learn how to recognize Him.
And here’s some good news: God didn’t stop calling. Even when Samuel got it wrong, God kept calling until he got it right.
🔥 That’s how kind God is. He’s more committed to speaking than we are to hearing.
Remember, hearing God's voice is your birthright. 🙌🏼
If you belong to Jesus, His voice belongs to you.
“My sheep hear My voice…” —Jesus in John 10:27
So... how do you tune in when everything feels loud or lifeless?
Here's are some simple practices to try, in everyday ways God loves to meet you.
🔊 10 Ways to Hear God More Clearly
1. 💘 Stir Up the Desire
Frustration is often hunger in disguise. Let it drive you to ask boldly: “God, I want to hear You.”
2. 👀 Pay Attention to the Small Stuff
Not every whisper comes with fireworks. Pay attention to belly laughs, beauty, nature, random nudges, "aha's", and the simple things you tend to overlook.
3. 🤲🏼 Pray Real-time Prayers
Pour out your heart and listen through your everyday life. On your commute. In the shower. On the bathroom break (#momlife). Let it be messy and raw—He already knows and He loves the honesty.
4. 📖 Stay in the Word
The Bible is your spiritual tuning fork! Want to know what God sounds like? Start with how Jesus moved and interacted with people. Let His living word jump off the page and speak directly into your everyday situations.
5. ✍🏽 Dialogue Journal
Write your prayers, then pause and let Him respond. Even one word, picture, or impression can open a whole new window. Over time, you’ll notice patterns and confirmations. Even those “out of place” thoughts may hold deeper meaning later.
6. 👭 Get Around People Who Hear Him
Don’t go it alone. Let safe, Spirit-filled friends help you discern, confirm, and grow in confidence. Vulnerability in a safe ushers wisdom and clarity. So lean into others' stories, insights, sermons, and experiences with God.
7. 🕊️ Practice Stillness
Start with two minutes. Breathe. Whisper “Jesus” each time your mind wanders. Notice what shifts. Peace is often the first sign He’s near. Like any skill, you’re training your spirit to lean in and it become more natural with practice—so don’t give up! Abiding always yields connection and fruit.
8. 🙏🏾 Try Something New
Fresh practices = fresh encounters. Try a prayer walk, prayer devotional, or lectio divina (meditating on each word of a verse). Change your physical space—pray aloud in nature or while doing chores. Combine worship with movement. Include thanksgivings along with your workout. Pray for family and friends while you brush your teeth. God’s everywhere; meet Him creatively!
9. 👣 Obey the Nudge
Every “yes” sharpens your hearing. It’s not about getting it perfect—it’s about moving with trust. Moving forward with Him unlocks the greatest clarity and faith. And just like an experienced parent can turn clean-up time into a dance party, ask God to show you where the joy is—even when obedience feels tough.
10. 🦻 Don’t Quit When It Feels Quiet
Sometimes it’s not that God’s silent—it’s that your mind’s loud, your heart’s heavy, or your spirit just needs tuning. Keep showing up. Keep leaning in. That kind of faith builds spiritual muscle and deepens your bond with Him—through every high, every low, every moment in between.
Here’s what's true:
God isn’t far off, waiting for you to get it together. He’s already near—closer than your next breath—ready to share His heart and guide your steps.
He's eager to answer this prayer, because He know the connection and oneness that hearing His voice of love produces in you.
You don’t have to strive. You were designed to hear Him.
So even now, you can pause for 30 seconds and whisper:
👉🏼 “Speak, Lord. I’m listening.”
Even if all you sense is peace, rest, or a simple thought—if it's producing both life AND peace, it's Him!
Because once you learn His voice, everything changes. 🔥
You get heaven’s clarity instead of the world’s chaos.
Now go try one new practice from above—and watch what happens. 💥
In step with Him,
Kandi 🫶🏼
