Ever feel like true happiness is always just out of reach? Like you have to check off some invisible list before you’re allowed to breathe deep and feel satisfied?
We tend to build these mental checklists, like a recipe, that we think we need to follow before we let ourselves taste joy:
📝 You’d be happier if you were more ____.
🛒 If you bought ____.
📅 If you worked at ____.
💍 If you were with someone else.
🌎 If you lived somewhere else.
👗 If you looked like ____.
💸 If you had more ____.
So many blanks to fill in, so little time. 🙃
Those whispers are super convincing, right? We act like joy is a finish line, something we have to hustle for and earn, hiding on the other side of a promotion, a perfect body, a bigger house, or a funnier personality.
But here’s a refreshing sip of truth from Elisabeth Elliot:
“The secret of joy is Christ in me, not me in a different set of circumstances.”
Ooo, that's good... Read that again! 👆🏽
Joy isn’t about snagging what we don’t have; it’s about nurturing what’s already within us. It’s an inside job—something God designed us to experience through Him, regardless of the chaos around us.
Here’s the kind of joy God’s talking about:
🌟 “But the fruit of the Spirit is… joy.” (Galatians 5:22) – Real joy isn’t something you manufacture. It’s a natural byproduct of being connected to the Holy Spirit, of letting His life flow through you.
🌟 “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” (John 15:11) – Jesus ties our joy to His words and His presence. This means it’s something that can grow as we stay connected to Him.
🌟 “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4) – When you find your delight in God, your desires align with His, and He starts to reshape your heart from the inside out.
🌟 “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33) – Prioritize God, and He’ll handle the rest. That’s a promise.
🌟 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11) – Your journey is meant to be a masterpiece, painted with the vibrant colors of His promises and your faith.
Joy isn’t something you hustle for, and and it’s not a trophy you get for checking off all the right boxes. It's the overflow of His presence—the steady pulse of a heart fully alive, driven by purpose and anchored in truth.
This is why prioritizing spiritual connection and emotional healing are so important: it opens the lanes for joy to flow!
That doesn’t mean we stop dreaming or chasing big callings. Accomplishments are amazing, but they’re meant to flow from a heart already full, not as a substitute for it. Even Jesus endured the cross “for the joy set before Him” (Hebrews 12:2)—driven by love and a purpose bigger than the pain.
So why not run your race like that? Let His truth be the loudest thing in your head, the anchor in your heart, and the power in your stride. Finding real joy in Christ is about living fully in His presence, right here, right now.
And rest assured, if there is FULLNESS of joy in God's presence (Psalm 16:11), your circumstances will start to change too. He truly is eager to fulfill the God-given dreams and desires of your heart!
So, how do you tap into this kind of joy?
✨ Gratitude Reset: Make gratitude your go-to response, not just a nice thought. Thankfulness actually breaks through mental noise and reshapes your mindset. It's a biblical and scientifically proven strategy for joy: “Give thanks in all circumstances.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
✨ Seek His Presence: Spend time in God’s presence, letting His love reset your perspective. Joy is a natural byproduct of connection. “In your presence there is fullness of joy.” (Psalm 16:11)
✨ Choose Joy Daily: Decide that you’re not going to wait for the stars to align before you feel good. He's designed you as a powerful person with a choice. So, let the little things—like a sunlit morning, a favorite song, or a deep breath—be your happiness triggers. The God of joy lives in you and will activate your ability to enjoy more of the life He's helping you walk in!
✨ Release the Checklist: Ditch that scoreboard. Joy isn’t a reward for the markers. It’s a gift from God—no strings, no hustle required.
✨ Anchor Your Heart: Make Jesus your “ONE THING” every day. “But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14)
Run with that joy. Breathe it in like fresh air. Refuse to leave your joy on standby. Life’s way too precious for that! 🌟
The Kingdom of God is here—righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Joy is part of your inheritance, a gift you don’t have to hustle for or even wait for. It’s already yours, poured out in abundance through Jesus.
I pray God will fill you with His overflowing presence of JOY today! 🎉
To your joy in Jesus,
Kandi
