Afraid You’re Missing Your Purpose? Why God Gives Freedom Before Mastery

Okay, let’s be real for a second. 😅

A lot of us quietly fear we’re gonna miss God’s will because we’re not “ready enough” yet.

Like there’s a secret spiritual deadline.

Like if we don’t mature fast enough, God’s gonna be like, “Welp. Next!” 🙃

So we hesitate and overthink. We wait until we feel more confident and put-together… then panic that we’re still not enough and don’t even know where to start.

And in the meantime, that crushing pressure creeps in — hurry up, get it right, don’t mess this up before it’s too late. 🙃

But that pressure? It's not from Scripture.

God doesn’t grow people through shaming or rushing. That’s not His character. God is patient, intentional, and deeply committed to finishing what He starts.

He grows us through trust, stretching, and walking with us while we’re still learning. Think: toddler learning to walk. 💛

🫣 When God called Jeremiah

When God called Jeremiah, He didn’t wait for confidence, clarity, or a polished résumé. He said, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.”

Jeremiah’s response wasn’t bold faith... it was honest panic:

👉🏼 “Ah, Sovereign Lord… I don’t know how to speak. I’m too young.” (Jer. 1:5–6)

And God didn’t say, “Come back when you’ve matured.” He didn’t say, “Yep, you’re right — you’re not ready.” He moved forward anyway. 🚶‍♂️✨

Jeremiah didn’t grow into his calling first — his calling grew him.

That’s the part we forget.

🫵🏽 How Growth Works In Real Life

God doesn’t wait for mastery to release calling. He releases calling and then grows you into it.

And honestly? This is how growth works everywhere:

  • Kids don’t learn by explanation first — they learn by experience. They try. They fall. They try again. Wobbling is a successful part of the process.

  • Puberty proves it too 😬 — strength comes before restraint, desire before discipline, feelings before regulation.

God isn’t shocked by that order… He designed it.

Scripture even says:

  • Discernment is trained over time (Hebrews 5:14)

  • Discipline produces fruit later, not instantly (Hebrews 12:11)

  • Clarity with God grows over time — like sunrise, where light comes gradually, not all at once (Proverbs 4:18 🌅)

How beautiful is that?

If we had everything figured out before we started, we’d never need faith, never feel wonder, and honestly… life would be painfully boring. 😴

Curiosity, hunger, passion, and joy are all very important to Him.

God built growth this way on purpose — so desire stays alive and your heart keeps leaning forward. 🥹

👀 Let's Look at Jesus' Leadership

Jesus taught this way on purpose.

He didn’t open with a theology lecture. He said, “Follow Me.” Walk with Me. Watch Me. Try it. Do it messy. Ask questions later. 😄

Experience first. Explanation second.

Because here’s the truth we all need tattooed on our souls 👇🏼

💥 God gives freedom before mastery.

💥 He trusts growth more than control.

💥 He allows power before polish.

🤗 You're Already Held

So if you’re worried you’ll miss God’s will because you’re still learning… hear me clearly:

🚫 God’s will is not a tightrope you fall off by being human.

🚫 You are not late.

🚫 You are not behind.

🚫 You are not disqualified because you’re still becoming.

God isn’t hovering over your life waiting for perfection.

He’s walking with you while you grow — and He’s way more committed to that process than you are. 💛

God never asked you to sprint without wisdom. Scripture actually says haste without understanding leads us off course (Proverbs 19:2).

That means slowness isn’t failure — it’s protection.

You’re allowed to grow at a human pace. You’re allowed to learn while you walk.

You’re allowed to press forward without having it all figured out.

Paul said it this way:

“I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” Philippians 3:12

Notice he didn’t say “I’ve arrived.” He said, “I’m moving toward what already has me.”

That’s you. 💛

You are not chasing purpose — purpose has already taken hold of you.

And even when you feel unfinished (because… hi, we all do), God isn’t stressed.

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” — Philippians 1:6

Not abandon it. Not rush it. Complete it. Strong, Growing, Held. 🫶🏽

🌅 Who You're Becoming

Your strength matters. Your season matters. Your process matters.

God doesn’t just value who you’ll be someday — He honors who you are right now, in the middle of it.

And yes… some seasons stretch you. Some feel slow. Some hurt in ways you didn’t expect. (I've been there plenty, too.)

But even there, Scripture tells us what’s actually being formed:

"Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." — Romans 5:3–4

"Character" there means wholeness, aka, your best self.

So if you’re living in the in-between — between calling and confidence, freedom and formation — pause and breathe.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re missing your purpose, remember that God doesn’t wait for mastery before inviting you forward.

You’re not missing it. You’re not behind schedule. You’re not doing this wrong.

In fact, the very fact that you’re here — reading this, sensing that quiet stirring in your heart, feeling a pull to be more intentional with the “more” God keeps whispering to you… that's not failure. That's evidence.

You’re living inside the process of it.

💫 A Gentle Question to Sit With

Instead of asking, “Am I ready yet?” try asking:

👉🏾 What small step might God be inviting me into next?

👉🏻 What desire or curiosity keeps resurfacing in my heart?

👉🏽 What would trusting Him look like this week — not someday?

Purpose sometimes arrives like a lightning bolt, but more often, it unfolds through one faithful yes at a time.

Let the path keep getting brighter. 🌅 Let God keep growing you stronger.

Because it really is true:

God gives freedom before mastery.

He work through growth, not control.

And He finishes what He starts.

I'd bet you’re doing better than you think. And you’re exactly where grace knows how to find you. 💛

Cheering for you!
