Why Do I Overreact? ✨ What God Sees in Your Big Emotions
A few years ago, my husband forgot to follow through on something he'd promised me. On the surface, it wasn't a huge deal... but my reaction was.
I found myself crying alone in a Starbucks, journaling through the hurt. Then I wrote these words:
"He doesn't care about me."
The moment I saw them on the page, I knew they weren't just about my husband. They belonged to 12-year-old me and the ache of growing up with an emotionally unavailable dad.
As I sat with those memories, I felt God holding me like the present Father I'd always needed. His peace brought healing, demonstrated my worth, and helped me see my situation (and my next step) with fresh clarity.
By the time I left, I knew exactly what conversation I needed to have with my husband. Instead of years of old hurt speaking through me, I could finally share what I felt and what I needed with honesty, grace, and love.
That afternoon became an encounter with God's care and truth that gave me the freedom to respond instead of simply react.
Which brings me to a question...
Have you ever surprised yourself with your own reaction?
Maybe you got way more hurt than the situation seemed to warrant.
🤷🏼♀️ Maybe you shut down.
🙅🏽♀️ Maybe you got defensive.
🤦🏼♀️ Maybe you replayed a conversation in your head for three days.
And afterward you wondered...
"Why am I like this?"
Can I offer you a different question:
What if your reaction actually makes sense?
There's a phrase therapists often use:
"If it's hysterical, it's historical."
That doesn't mean every big emotion comes from the past. But when your reaction feels much bigger than the moment in front of you, it's worth getting curious.
Your heart and nervous system may be doing more than reacting... they may also be remembering.
😩 If criticism feels unbearable...
...maybe love once felt connected to performance.
If rejection feels devastating...
...maybe your heart learned people leave — even emotionally.
🥸 If conflict makes you shut down...
...maybe speaking up never felt safe.
When something hurts us deeply, our hearts start trying to protect us from ever feeling that pain again — often without us even realizing it.
Here's what I believe:
Your reactions aren't random... they're clues.
And once you understand what they're pointing to, you have the freedom to choose differently.
The Bible shows us this
Even in Scripture, God often responded to people's reactions by addressing what was happening underneath them.
Think about Peter:
🙂↕️ One moment he's boldly declaring his loyalty to Jesus.
🙂↔️ Hours later he's denying Him three times.
Why? 👉🏽 Fear. Shame. Self-protection.
Or Elijah.
😎 Fresh off one of the greatest miracles in Scripture...
🙃 ...and then one threat sends him running into the wilderness, convinced he's alone, questioning if he wants to live.
God didn't shame either of them. (← I think this is most people's major fear)
👋🏾 He met them.
🫱🏽 Fed them.
🫳🏾 Asked questions.
🫱🏾🫲🏼 Restored them.
God has always cared about what's happening underneath our reactions.
That's one of the things I love most about Jesus. He didn't just correct behavior.
He cared about hearts, asked questions, drew people out. He went after healing people from the inside out.
This changed everything for me
If you've ever wondered, "Why do I overreact?" I want you to know you're not alone.
My Starbucks encounter with God was beautiful, but it also left me with bigger questions.
I wanted to know what else had been quietly shaping my life.
That's when I stepped back and looked at my whole story.
When I first went through Revival Life coaching, all I knew was I had severe anxiety and burnout — from marriage, to motherhood, to ministry, to my body breaking down.
But I didn't know why or how to get out of the swirl.
Turns out... those were symptoms.
As we stepped back and looked at the bigger story of my life, one pattern became impossible to ignore:
Overfunctioning.
I'd spent years pushing past my limits and compensating for other people.
God gently showed me that what looked like love was often being driven by guilt and fear.
I'd spent decades believing things like...
💭 "If I don't hold everything together, everything will fall apart."
💭 "Other people's needs matter more than mine."
💭 "Being 'low maintenance' was loving."
💭 "If there wasn't enough to go around, I'd simply need less."
💭 "I'm strong enough."
Looking back, those beliefs made perfect sense given the world I grew up in. But they were never meant to keep leading my life.
No wonder I was exhausted... asking for help felt impossible... and anxiety and burnout kept showing up. 💡
So once I stopped calling them "just my personality" — and worse, mistaking unhealthy self-sacrifice for holiness...
I realized I didn't have to keep living from them.
Understanding my story didn't excuse my reactions. It explained them.
And once they made sense, they stopped feeling permanent.
See, there was a younger version of me that I kept getting angry with. She wasn't trying to ruin my life. She was trying to protect it the only way she knew how.
I'd spent years criticizing her and trying to make her stronger instead of sitting with her, understanding her, and caring for her.
Then God began renewing my mind with His truth.
"In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and trust shall be your strength." — Isaiah 30:15
I recognized the patterns in a safe community of women, and they helped me hear even more of God's truth over me:
💛 I am wanted and chosen (no need to perform).
💛 I am not exhausting to love.
💛 My needs are not dramatic... they're doors to receive love from God & others.
💛 Rest is an act of trust (& deeply productive).
💛 I am wholeheartedly enough.
One of the biggest shifts God made in me was showing me how people who are filled full (fulfilled) overflow in serving others. I thought of Jesus being with the Father in the wee hours of the morning.
Service was never meant to flow from depletion, fear, or duty — but from delight.
One morning, I remember asking Him, "God... am I just a billion needs to You?" I sensed Him gently respond, "Then I am a billion fulfillments. That's how this works." 💞
Today...
✨ I ask for help without guilt.
✨ I rest without feeling lazy.
✨ I notice old patterns before they take over.
✨ I trust God's voice instead of fear.
✨ I finally feel like I have choices.
You aren't trapped by your story or knee-jerk reactions.
There really is another way to live. 💕
Healing begins with curiosity
I've sat with so many women who whisper...
🤔 "I never knew what to do with my big emotions..."
🫣 "I've always felt like 'too much' or 'too dramatic'..."
😳 "I've felt confused and scared when resentment bubbles up in me..."
And then most of them try to change their behavior first.
💭 "I just need to stop overreacting."
💭 "I need more self-control."
💭 "I need to stop being anxious."
But once you understand why your heart learned to respond the way it did...
you finally know what actually needs healing.
What gets labeled an "overreaction" often has roots much deeper than the moment itself.
Sometimes it's a younger part of you still trying to protect you the best way she knows how.
And now that part of you simply needs to be met with love, truth, and safety.
I now know the better questions are...
🎯 What is this reaction trying to protect?
🎯 Where did this begin?
🎯 What does God want me to know now?
These questions helped me stop fighting myself and start understanding myself.
Today, when I have a big reaction, I don't immediately criticize myself. I get curious. Then I ask God what a loving, healthy response looks like now.
My story isn't unique.
We've now watched hundreds of women experience this same kind of freedom.
Maybe that's possible for you too.
Imagine understanding yourself that way.
🤔 Imagine no longer asking, "Why am I like this?" and instead asking, "God, how are you freeing me?"
🤔 Imagine responding to yourself with compassion instead of criticism.
🤔 Imagine finally understanding why certain patterns keep showing up... and having the freedom to choose something different.
The goal isn't becoming someone else. It's becoming the woman God created you to be before fear, shame, and survival started writing the script.
If reading this feels like someone finally put words to your experience... that's why we created Your Story, Bravely Owned.
Not to dig up the past or give you another self-improvement project.
But to help you connect the dots of your story so your reactions, relationships, and patterns finally start making sense.
Over just a few weeks, we watch women stop seeing themselves as:
"I'm too much."
"I'm too emotional."
"I'm bad at hearing God."
"I'm just anxious."
...and instead begin seeing themselves through the eyes of Jesus — with compassion, clarity, courage, and hope.
One of my favorite parts is watching women become that voice for one another. Because sometimes another woman can see God's fingerprints on your story before you can.
When that happens, shame starts losing its grip, freedom starts growing, and you begin becoming more fully the woman God has always known you to be.
If your heart has been longing for that, we'd love to walk with you.
Maybe you're not "too much."
Maybe you've simply been carrying a story your heart has been trying to survive for a very long time.
And maybe Jesus is ready to help you rewrite it. 💛
With so much love,
Kelsi
